
In Chennai, a tragic incident occurred at the Aavin plant in Tiruvallur district resulting in the death of a 30-year-old female employee named K Umarani. The accident took place when her scarf got caught in a conveyor belt, causing a severe throat injury. Following the incident, the plant's supervisor, Varun Kumar, was arrested for negligence leading to Umarani's death. Additionally, two employees were suspended, and disciplinary action was taken against five others. The government assured compensation for Umarani's family and proposed implementing uniform and safer dress codes to prevent similar accidents in the future. Umarani, who worked in the packaging section at Aavin's Kakkalur plant, tragically lost her life due to the conveyor belt mishap. Despite the existing standard operating procedure at Aavin plants, the incident underscored the importance of reinforcing safety measures. The minister for dairy development highlighted the necessity of stricter safety protocols, especially for female employees working in hazardous areas. Discussions are ongoing to introduce safety measures like overcoats to prevent such accidents while respecting cultural traditions. Umarani leaves behind two children, and immediate compensation of 10 lakhs has been requested.SA Ponnusamy from the TN Milk Dealers Welfare Association stated that Aavin is currently discussing with the Tiruvallur collector to guarantee timely provision of appropriate compensation, terminal benefits, and settlements for the family in need.
